In 1960 a twenty-two-year-old Japanese boy got on a motorcycle with a friend and left Maebashi to travel the world. He crossed India, Pakistan and Europe, and reached Rome in the year of the Olympics. His name was Hideyuki Miyakawa, and he did not yet know that Italy would become his home.
It was in Turin, at a motor show, that he met Maria Luisa — Marisa. They married in 1962, and while she took root in his life, he took root in Italian design: he worked alongside Giorgetto Giugiaro at the birth of Italdesign, contributing to an unrepeatable season of this country’s industrial creativity.
Then, in the Nineties, the second turning point: the family left Turin for the hills of Suvereto, in the Val di Cornia, and chose Bulichella — an estate born in 1983 from the dream of four families who wished to live together, farming with respect for nature, among the pioneers of organic agriculture in Tuscany. Since 1999 Bulichella has been the Miyakawa home: Hideyuki made it his last great work of design — this time drawn with vines, olive trees and patience.
His commitment reached beyond the estate: he served as president of the Val di Cornia DOC wine consortium and fought for the recognition of the Suvereto DOCG, achieved in 2012. Today his children carry the winery forward in the same spirit: organic, familial, deeply rooted.
The wines tell this love story between two worlds. The Syrah “Hide” bears his name — pronounced “Hidè”, short for Hideyuki. Coldipietrerosse, the estate’s flagship red, bears instead the name of this land of red stones and nearby sea. Organic, precise, elegant wines: design is something you never stop doing.
